For decades now, Botox has dominated the aesthetic enhancement industry – accounting for nearly 50% of all cosmetic procedures in the US alone! As the most well-known injectable neurotoxin, Botox only had slight competition from counterparts like Dysport and Xeomin – two slightly different formulations of the same botulinum toxin-A, famously the active ingredient which mirrors the mechanism of the botulism to prevent the contraction of facial muscles – and in turn, prevent the formation of new wrinkles.

Well, for the first time in over 10 years, there’s a new name in injectable neurotoxins entering the US aesthetics market, introducing Jeuveau®!

What is Jeuveau®?

Jeuveau® is a neurotoxin, with a chemical structure similar to Botox, that was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines and glabellar wrinkles! The team at Miami Wellness & Aesthetics are excited to introduce their patients to what’s being called one of the best neuromodulator alternatives to Botox to hit the industry in recent times.

Jeuveau® vs. Botox

Both Botox and Jeuveau® contain the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A. This is neurotoxin that works by relaxing muscles beneath the skin. When used as a wrinkle treatment, these types of injections create a smoother appearance in the skin. Botox was first approved for cosmetic use in 2002. It’s used to treat frown lines or glabellar lines (the wrinkles between your eyebrows), along with horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet (wrinkles at the corners of your eyes). Since its emergence on the market, other types of botulinum toxin A products have been developed, including Jeuveau®.

Since Jeuveau® has been on the market for a shorter time, it’s currently only FDA approved for the treatment of glabellar lines. A doctor may decide to use Jeuveau® to treat other locations on the face and body, but this would be considered off-label use, in that it hasn’t yet been studied and hasn’t been FDA approved. While both injections have the same active ingredient, the precise formulas vary slightly. Deciding between Botox and Jeuveau® may depend on trial and error. Some people respond better to one over the other. However, Jeuveau® may be a better option if you’re new to botulinum toxin injections and are looking for a cheaper option to start. It’s also the best option if you’re looking to treat glabellar lines. Botox is used for these same wrinkles, along with other types of facial lines.

What Areas Can Jeuveau® Treat?

Jeuveau® is best known for its ability to treat frown lines (glabellar lines). Two separate trials found that 67 percent and 71 percent of people saw significant improvements after receiving these injections. This is compared to a 1 percent improvement reported in the placebo groups. If you’re looking to treat other types of wrinkles around the mouth or eyes, you may consider talking to a dermatologist about other options that may be more effective. These may include the original Botox or other types of injectables made with hyaluronic acid.

How Does Jeuveau® Treatment Work?

During your consultation, your provider will outline a plan they will implement during your treatment session. The procedure for Jeuveau® usually consists of the following:

  • Your provider will begin by cleaning off your face of any makeup, and other cosmetics.
  • Next, they will inject Jeuveau® into five sites around your frown lines, using several small injections. The process takes up to 15 minutes. Once the injections are completed, you’re free to leave with no downtime required.
  • As the botulinum toxin takes hold, your underlying muscles will relax and create a smoother appearance in your frown lines. You may start noticing slight results right away, with full results developing in about a week.
